Hemogram Machine: Faster, Closer Diagnostics

For years, beneficiaries had to travel to distant laboratories for routine blood work. A single complete blood count could take days — between travel, waiting for results, and returning for a clinical review. For people already facing stigma and economic hardship, every extra step was a barrier.

Many skipped tests altogether. Others tested but never returned for results. Clinicians made treatment decisions with incomplete data, and retention in HIV care suffered as a direct consequence.

Teens Watch Centre procured and deployed an on-site hemogram machine at the Ukunda clinic. Now a full blood panel is drawn, processed, and reviewed in the same visit — often within minutes.

Clinicians can make same-day decisions on ART initiation, adjust regimens based on real-time data, and flag abnormalities before they become emergencies. The machine is operated by trained lab technicians and maintained through a service contract that ensures uninterrupted use.

This case illustrates a principle that runs through all of TWC's work: remove the structural barrier, and clinical outcomes follow. A hemogram machine is not headline news — but for a person who would otherwise walk past the clinic because they cannot afford the lab visit, it is the difference between staying in care and falling through the cracks.
